RSE/PSHE Schemes of Work

The Grief & Loss with BB Bear – RSE/PSHE Scheme of Work is a comprehensive, six-lesson programme designed to support KS2 pupils in understanding and navigating the complex emotions that accompany grief and loss. At its heart is the touching story BB and the Loss Star, a narrative that follows BB Bear as he experiences the loss of his sister and, through his journey, learns to recognise, express and manage his feelings. This carefully sequenced unit provides educators with a coherent, emotionally intelligent approach to a sensitive topic, promoting resilience, compassion and self-awareness.

Delivered as a whole-class programme, this six-part sequence enables teachers to build safe, inclusive learning environments where pupils can explore change, loss and bereavement in age-appropriate, meaningful ways. The structure guides children through key mechanisms of grief, helps them understand that loss is a natural part of life, and equips them with strategies for emotional regulation, supportive peer interactions and positive coping responses.

Importantly, the scheme aligns with the updated statutory Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education guidance being introduced from 1 September 2026. The revised framework explicitly includes change, loss and bereavement as part of mental health and wellbeing education at primary level, recognising that “grief is a natural response to bereavement and that everyone grieves differently.” GOV.UK+1

This programme not only prepares schools for statutory compliance but does so in a way that builds confidence and capability in educators.

While ideal for universal delivery, the scheme is also extremely adaptable: it can be used in small group interventions or 1:1 support, and by school counsellors, nurses, therapists and other practitioners working directly with pupils experiencing grief. With its evidence-informed design, it empowers schools to address one of the most profound experiences in childhood with depth, sensitivity and optimism.

In short, this unit transforms a challenging subject into an engaging, supportive and inspiring learning journey, equipping young learners with understanding, empathy and emotional literacy essential for life.
